Section:

No. 7 (2002)  Editorial

Abstract:

The linguistic conceptual frame of the naming process is sustained by specifications referring to the relation between "names" and "appellatives". The first part of our paper outlines this conceptual body with a view to applying it to Dickens's novel Dombey and Son. It focuses on personal names considered under different aspects (etymological, lexical, grammatical, stylistic, pragmatic), but there is also reference to other names (place names, names of institutions, of animals etc.) and to their functions. The last part is meant to reflect the way in which subjectivity and objectivity are implied in the naming process.

Keywords:

the naming process, names and appellatives, common and proper nouns, personal names, terms of address.
