Abstract:

In the last 20 years, the development of numerical power system protection and control equipment (SAS - Substation automation system) has pursued certain goals, such as hard wiring reduction in the substation, extended functionality, improved reliability, improved flexibility, and – probably most important – cost reduction. These goals are so universal for protection and control development that they did not lose their importance and are still applicable today. However, the recently developed technology offers new means to achieve these goals and to design better systems. This paper presents a recently designed substation protection and control system applying new technological solutions, that also converge with IEC61850 standard. Potential advantages of applied architecture and technologies are discussed.
