Abstract:

Starting with 2004 up to present, the authors have used a mixture of detomidine (known under the commercial name as Domosedan) and ketamine for immobilising 27 European bison. The animals came from captive and semi free herds from Vama Buzaului Bison Reserve, Neagra Bucsani Bison Reserve and Vanatori Neamt Bison Reserve. A combination of these 2 substances was administrated with a sedation gun Telinject model Vario 3. The animals were fully immobilised after 20 minutes from the moment they had been administered a full dose. The application of an antidote (atipamesole – known under the commercial name as Antisedan) resulted in a full recover of the animal after a time interval of 15-20 minutes. For all the reasons exposed above, this mixture was considered by the authors proper for European bison species.
