Abstract

In Europe, anaerobic digestion is a sector in full development. The solid product
of this anaerobic digestion is used as a fertilizer. In terms of health, it is essential to ensure
the safety of the digestate spread on agricultural land. Treatments upstream of anaerobic
digestion could potentiate the hygenizing effect of anaerobic digestion. Acid and heat
pretreatments were tested in this study. These resulted in more or less significant reductions
in the concentration of Escherichia coli, enterococci and spores of Clostridium perfringens.
The combination of different pre-treatments would be interesting to study in future
research.
