Abstract: | The paper is an attempt to trace the relationship between the language of a text and the age it belongs to. The analysis of the paradigms characteristic of both the Victorian and Dickensian world - time, change, progress, position, unnaturalness and habit -, of the male selves and of some of the symbols in the novel are meant to show the relation of subjectivity, consciousness and communication to the ideology of the age, contained within the frame of -ism/ Dombeyism. |
