Abstract:

One of the most important directions of biological research is uncovering and preserving biodiversity. This is also an objective established at the Convention from Rio (1992). In order to preserve unaltered the natural ecosystems, one of the first steps we have to do is to know their structure.

The aim of our research was to carry out a study on the structure of the algal communities from two wetland areas: one from Legii and another one from Sântejude. Both wetland areas are located in the FizeÂş brook catchment area, a tributary of the SomeÂşu Mic river. The wetland from Sântejude is situated at 285 m altitude, at 23˚58’24” longitude and 46˚57’02” latitude. The average depth is about 0.8 m. The wetland from the Legii area lays at 294 m altitude, at 24˚03’12” longitude, 46˚50’23” latitude, with the average depth of 0.5-1 m (Geografia Romaniei, III, 1987). The waters of these areas exhibit relatively high salinity values (more than 2000 mg/l at Sântejude). The explanation for this phenomena is the presence of salt deposits in the geological substratum. An important aspect is that the algae from these two wetlands were never studied before, therefore our data are the first ones on this subjects in the areas.
