STRUCTURA CĂRȚILOR IMNOGRAFICE ROMÂNEȘTI DIN SECOLUL AL XIX-LEA

The Structure of 19th-Century Romanian Hymnographic BooksThe study analyzes the structural features of 19th-century Romanian hymnographic books, offering a comparative analysis of editions published in Chișinău and in other Romanian printing centers. Starting from the reemergence of scholarly interest in religious texts following the period of ideological repression in the 20th-century, the research highlights the contribution of liturgical books in transmitting theological tradition and reflecting the social, cultural, and linguistic transformations of local communities. The investigation elucidates the historical premises of the development of Orthodox hymnography – from the Tropologion to the consolidation of the medieval and modern hymnographic corpus – as well as the specific characteristics of translations into Romanian. The examination of the old book collections from the National Library of the Republic of Moldova and the Library of the Romanian Academy enables the reconstruction of Romanian typographical continuity. Finally, the article examines the structural particularities of the Octoechos, Triodion, and Penticostarion as fundamental components of the Orthodox liturgical cycle.

FASCINATION AND AVERSION – THE IMAGINARY OF THE PHANAR IN THE WORKS OF THREE ROMANIAN WRITERS

Although generally pejorative, associated with negativity and aversion, in literary imagery, several aspects of the fascinating Phanar and of the adjacent imaginary, are relevant, starting from the positive etymological implications in modern Greek. Shifting from a bright origin to a dark representation, it becomes a multi-faceted cultural symbol, with strong stylistic and semantic reverberations in literary discourse. Its imagemes, the dominant imagistic nuclei, under the sign of the Phanar as phenomenon, as appearance, as fantasy, subscribe to the (an)historical Phanar, the Phanar as a state of mind, as a modus vivendi, as a specific atmosphere, but also as a (de-)limitation of the text. The three selected novels, Craii de Curtea-Veche by Mateiu Caragiale, Fanar by Horia Stancu and Manuscrisul fanariot by Doina Ruști, somewhat express the symbolic, aesthetic and ideological functions of the Fanar through the prism of the concept of re-readability. In these writings, the Phanariot world is marked by moral ambiguity, duplicity and decadence, and the strategies of survival and domination are based on fear, manipulation and corruption. The Phanar is depicted as a space of hypocrisy and multiple faces. Fears and threats always arise, tools of control and intimidation are used: executions, exile, imprisonment, poisoning. Bribery also plays an ambivalent role, as a tool of negotiation and influence. There are various Phanariot plans and tactics: delay, false promises, manipulation, betrayal, and information trading are practiced, and political intrigue becomes the central mechanism of holding power. As for attitudes and states of mind, there is a permanent oscillation between credulity and suspicion, between self-humiliation and excessive pride, reflecting emotional and moral instability. The Phanariotes have many character flaws, among which laziness, indecision, whims, boredom stand out, but also the lust for power, greed, denunciation, cruelty, as traits of a corrupt and decadent society. Thus, in a broader sense, a kind of Phanariot hybris arises in the three novels as a decadent and humanized form of ancient pride, expressing deep human weaknesses rather than a tragic destiny. The literary Phanar ultimately becomes a symbol of the capitulation of the human condition, of a multicultural synthesis and also of an aesthetic ambiguity, with profound resonances in these times.

VIAȚA „ÎN PARANTEZĂ”? LIVIUS CIOCÂRLIE, ÎNTRE PROZĂ ȘI JURNAL (I)

The Life în Parentheses? Livius Ciocârlie between Prose and JournalEvery day life transpires in the self-critical and self-referential notes of Livius Ciocârlie. A huge contrast opens up between the authors present, the person who writes a work such as The Sunken Bell, and the character’s past experiences (his own) that the writer explores. The present looks rather pale and sketchy, reduced to lamentations and self mockery that are rather hard to be believed even by the author himself. The past, on the contrary, is represented and brought up to date literarily in captivating sequences of “inner cinematography”. The author crosses the boundary between fiction and journal. A specific scene from his consumed past, outdated, “dead” past holds the attention of the reader for the techniques of Livius Ciocârlie in the construction of the narrative.

The Translations of Heinrich Heine’s Works that Facilitated the Quick Reception of the Writer in Romanian Literature in the Latter Half of the 19th CenturyDuring the latter half of the ninetieth century there was a large openness of the Romanians to the West, which aims to inform them about the political and cultural life in the Western countries. The influence of German culture on the Romanian one was realized not only through the translation into Romanian language of the works of German writers. During this period, Romanians opened up to the West, which was intended to inform them about the political and cultural life in Western countries. In this context, the first songs of the Book of Songs appeared in Romanian literature.

GEORGE COȘBUC – UN PRECURSOR AL LUI STELIAN DUMISTRĂCEL ÎN PRIVINȚA FRAZEOLOGIEI

George Coșbuc – one of Stelian Dumistrăcel’s Forerunners regarding PhraseologyIn this article, I aim at demonstrating that the writer and philologist George Coșbuc can be considered a remarkable forerunner of the specialist Stelian Dumistrăcel not only in terms of his interest in clarifying the origin of some Romanian idioms, but also in terms of his theoretical “intuition”, since he aptly “guessed” some conceptual distinctions relevant to the field of phraseology itself. In this regard, I will examine here only one etymological interpretation (along with its theoretical consequences), namely the one that the Transylvanian poet gave to the Romanian idiom a-și lua lumea în cap (“to go into the wide world”).

DE-A PUIA-GAIA: NOTE (GEO- ȘI ETNO-) LINGVISTICE

De-a puia-gaia: (geo- and ethno-) Linguistic NotesIn our study, we examined, from a geolinguistic and ethnolinguistic perspective, the ludonym “de-a puia-gaia”, investigated by Emil Petrovici during the surveys for Romanian Linguistic Atlas in the interwar period. To provide an overview of this ludic activity, we gave a brief diachronic presentation of the game, then we followed the descriptions resulting from the main linguistic surveys (Hasdeu, Atlasul lingvistic român (ALR) [the Romanian Linguistic Atlas], Noul Atlas lingvistic român (NALR) [the New Romanian Linguistic Atlas]) and the folklore survey coordinated by I. Mușlea. Subsequently, using the Romanian Linguistic Atlas, we tracked the geographical distribution of the terms used for the studied ludonym and attempted to analyze each name the informants gave. Finally, we have highlighted the existence of a notable lexical-semantic distinction within Romania: in the south and east, the emphasis is on the kidnapper in the name of the game, according to the Slavic model, while in the north and west, it is on the defender, following the Hungarian model.

IAURT VS LAPTE ACRU. SENSURI ȘI DISTRIBUȚIE GEOGRAFICĂ PE BAZA ALR ȘI A RĂSPUNSURILOR LA CHESTIONARELE MLR

Iaurt 'yogurt' vs lapte acru 'Sour Milk'. Meanings and Geographical Distribution Based on ALR and the Responses to MLR QuestionnairesOur study approaches the meanings and geographical distribution of the terms iaurt ‘yogurt’ and lapte acru ‘sour milk’ based on the responses to the Questionnaires of the Romanian Language Museum (MLR) and the linguistic material resulting from the surveys for the Romanian Linguistic Atlas (ALR I and II).The idea of addressing this distinction comes in the context of Turkey’s initiative to submit to UNESCO, for evaluation and inscription in The Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, the multinational dossier Traditional techniques of yogurt making and related social practices (to which Romania and Bulgaria were invited to contribute as partner states), respectively the compilation of the technical file of the element, where, under the section of Romanian local and regional names, various terms (and phonetic variants) in a relationship of partial synonymy are listed.The analysis of dialectal material indicates that on the Daco-Romanian territory there is a fairly large variety of terms recorded for the dairy product obtained by fermentation of raw milk / raw milk mixed with boiled milk / boiled milk, and the production processes, although they may differ more or less from one area to another, are known and used for different types of milk. In the case of cow’s milk, in the northern area of the Daco-Romanian territory, terms with extremely well-delimited areas are recorded in the interwar period (sămăchișă, chișleag ‘sour milk’), while lapte acru ‘sour milk’, a much more general term, is predominant in the case of sheep’s milk processing. Regarding the term iaurt ‘yogurt’, it is limited to the southeastern area of Daco-Romanian (and is completely absent in the South Danubian Romanian dialects), however, in field research from an ethnological perspective recently conducted, due to the industrial manufacture of yogurt and the aggressive advertising of this product through various means, the term has spread rapidly in the last decades.

Christmas and New Year Dishes – Ritual Practices and Symbolic MeaningsThe work highlights several significant aspects of traditional Romanian culture, ritual practices and foods during winter holidays, based on responses to questionnaires conducted by Ion Muşlea during the interwar period, found in the Folklore Archive of the Romanian Academy and rigorously transcribed by researcher Cosmina Timoce Mocanu, from the Romanian Academy Institute – Cluj-Napoca Branch.We focus on those practices that relate to the culinary aspect of winter celebrations, as they largely reflect an ancient aspect of Romanian identity and culture, namely: the preparation of colaci – a traditional round shaped braided bagel type of bread (an aliment with strong ritual and symbolic connotations) and the arrangement and order of consumption of dishes on Christmas Eve.

INTERVIUL – METODĂ DE INVESTIGARE ETNOLINGVISTICĂ A PATRIMONIULUI ALIMENTAR

The Interview – A Method for the Ethnolinguistic Investigation of Food HeritageThis paper examines the interview as a methodological tool for the ethnolinguistic investigation of regional food heritage, with particular attention to the ways in which linguistic practices reflect and construct cultural knowledge. Drawing on Dell Hymes’s framework of the ethnography of speaking, the study approaches the interview not merely as a means of eliciting information, but as a situated communicative event shaped by social norms, cultural values, and interactional conventions. Within this perspective, discourse is analyzed in relation to the broader social and cultural structures that condition its production and interpretation. The interview provides access to speakers’ knowledge of traditional food practices, while simultaneously revealing the communicative strategies through which such knowledge is articulated, negotiated and transmitted. By focusing on naturally occurring patterns of speech, the study highlights the dynamic relationship between language, culture and social interaction. In order to analyze the general mechanisms of this type of communication, the paper provides as a case study an interview on traditional food practices, conducted by the author within the project Digitalization of Cultural Food Heritage.
