Andreea Mironescu

The Novel of Memory in Data and Interpretations: Subgenres, Generations, ContentsThis article sets out to present the design and output of the research project MEMORO: The Novel of Memory in Postcommunism: Subgenres, Generations, Transnational Networks. The project aimed at providing a qualitative and quantitative research of the novel of memory in the Romanian literary field after 1989, using recent theories and methodologies from the field of literary and memory studies. After delineating the genre and its five subgenres, the article elaborates on statistical analyses based on a dataset containing 230 novels published between 1990-2022 and authored by 168 male and female writers. The last part draws conclusions regarding the potential of literature in general and of the novel in particular to intervene in the society at large.

SCRIITORI ROMÂNI ÎN DOSARELE SECURITĂȚII – NOTE GENERALE

Ana-Maria Ticu

Romanian Writers within the Files of Securitate Archive – General NotesThe aim of this paper is to take a look back at a series of actions and influences of the Securitate – the political police of the communist regime – on writers. We will name some of those who worked in the literary field in Romania at that time, but also the way they were surveilled, the way their files were fabricated with false information and how censorship influenced, limited or even annihilated their activity. We will also point out some general things on the way in which those literary figures chose to react and resist the harassment of the totalitarian regime. Recent researches show a growing interest in declassified information, both from the perspective of the literary and political communities.

HERTA MÜLLER AND THE EMPIRE OF METAPHOR

Marius Miheț

The fact that, for nearly a decade, none of her works have been translated into Romanian reflects not only a lack of public success but also the absence of editorial interest aligned with the author’s specific demands. Equally revealing is the near-anonymity surrounding the celebration of her seventieth birthday within the Romanian literary community. Uncompromising, incisive, and unapologetically principled, Herta Müller rejects any editorial, translational, or human compromise as a testament to her unwavering ethical stance toward a country she loves conditionally. This study examines the early memoir volumes of Herta Müller, focusing on the narratological and poetic dimensions of a labyrinthine body of work that remains largely unexplored, particularly following the Nobel laureate’s gradual descent into obscurity among contemporary audiences, especially in Romania.

OVID S. CROHMĂLNICEANU – DEGHIZĂRI ALE GENULUI BIOGRAFIC

Ruxandra Diana Moholea (David)

Ovid S. Crohmălniceanu – Disguises of the Biographical GenreThe postrevolutionary years opened doors for various forms of diaristic literature as a sign of complete freedom of speech and freedom of self as an artist. ‘Little life stories’ became the new main literary attraction and many writers approached this epic genre in an attempt to recreate past social environments and to embrace confession as a way of connecting with the readers. People in need to find the truth about the dark communist era or to reclaim it piece by piece were in desperate search for anything that could fill in the blanks and one way of doing so was by devouring autobiographies, memoirs, diaries or any other forms of subjective litterature. Both readers and critics were eagerly waiting for the latest book of Ovid S. Crohmălniceanu, Amintiri deghizate (Disguised Recollections). But instead of being an intimate life story or at least parts of it that could provide information about his deep connection with the communist ideology or his past choices in matters of literary criticism, the book proves to be a sum of providential encounters, personal experiences related to many other important writers of the communist era, random episodes concerning his literary contacts or anecdotes. Therefore, the book was criticized precisely for deceiving the reader and for avoiding the truth or deliberately omitting it. Even so, Amintiri deghizate still remains an important document for the litterary history as well as for the litterary criticism.

MUZICA POP/ROCK/FOLK ÎN PERIOADA COMUNISTĂ. DE LA „COLOANA SONORĂ A CENZURII” LA UNDERGROUNDUL PĂUNESCIAN

Magdalena Chitic

Pop/Rock/Folk Music during the Communist Period. From the "Soundtrack of Censorship" to Păunescu's UndergroundThis article proposes, through a critical analysis, a new prototype of adherence to the world of music during the liberalized communist period. Rock music, from its appearance to the present day, has represented a true musical revolution. Adjacent genres, such as folk or pop, complete the musical landscape of the communist period which wanted to impose itself. In those gray years of communism, liberalization measures were necessary, only to maintain the regime, but not to truly satisfy public predilection. However, these same liberalization measures have gradually led to the destabilization of this totalitarian system, thus showing its true face. It is certain that, with or without the will of the regime, one day the artistic sphere would still have had its say and would have unleashed a real hurricane that could have destroyed everything in its path.

MECANISMUL CANONIC. DOUĂ CAZURI ALE LITERATURII – CEZAR PETRESCU ȘI CAMIL PETRESCU

Otilia Ungureanu

The Canonical Mechanism. Two Cases of Literature – Cezar Petrescu and Camil PetrescuThe present work aims to analyze the trajectory of two novels, in order to reveal the Canonical Mechanism, by which the status of the literary works changed over time. This approach primarily involved a return to redefining the concept of the Literary Canon. A working tool of literature, depending on the social, curricular, political, ideological, aesthetic or cultural component, the Literary Canon is primarily a mark of the vitality and persistence over time of the writings. What are the strengths of a novel like Patul lui Procust through which we could argue the mechanism of insertion in public memory? Why does a novel like Întunecare lose the fight against time? In order to provide a perspective on this discussion, we are forced not only to analyze the actualizing mechanisms of the novel, but also to play a double role in this analysis of the novel, both led by the critical act, which implies an objective approach to the text, and by the subjective act of placement in the role of reader.

PREZENȚA ȘI REPREZENTAREA FEMEII ÎN VIAȚA ȘI OPERA LUI CEZAR PETRESCU

Alexandra Butnaru

The Presence and Representation of Woman in the Life and Work of Cezar PetrescuCezar Petrescu was a remarkable figure în Romanian literature, which leads us to believe that he has fully caught the attention of literary critics. However, one aspect of his life, namely the sentimental one, takes a secondary place. Anyhow, this aspect can still be reconstructed from his correspondence and from an appeal to his work. It cannot be left in the shadows, especially since women embodied complex beings, capable of love, but also of destroying destinies.

DIDASCALIILE ÎN PIESELE LUI IOAN SLAVICI: FUNCȚIE ȘI INOVAȚIE

Irina-Marina Savinoiu (Chelariu)

Script Stage Directions in the Plays of Ioan Slavici: Function and InnovationSlavici's literary work, less known for his dramatic writings, has played, nevertheless, a special role in Romanian dramaturgy that marks the beginning of the modern era in theater. The script stage directions used by him in comedies, tragedies and dramas bring a distinct hue through their function of creating the impression of truthfulness, authenticity using some slightly innovative elements in this field.

FAȚA COVORULUI

Vasile Spiridon

The Face of the Woven CarpetThe fourth, revised edition of Nicolae Manolescu's most recent anthume book, Teme (Themes), allows us to observe, starting from the essays contained within it, the way in which the "symbol from the woven carpet" of the destiny that the most important critic and literary historian of the post-war period forged for himself took shape. Re-reading these ”themes” allows us to sketch a profession of faith of the great literary critic, as well as the data of a spiritual autobiography, because the essays in the book also carry a confessional memorialistic note. His existence did not unfold by the mere virtue of some random and insignificant causalities, because Nicolae Manolescu had the strength to transform his life into destiny.
