MINCIUNA ȘI ÎNGHEȚATUL APELOR. DESPRE ORIGINEA UNEI EXPRESII ROMÂNEȘTI
Cristinel Munteanu
On Lies and Frozen Waters. On the Origin of a Romanian IdiomTaking as a point of departure an explanation given by the Romanian poet George Coșbuc concerning the origin of the set phrase minte de îngheață apele (literally, ‘one lies so much that water freezes over’), I will propose a different phraseological etymology, providing evidence extracted mostly from some Romanian fairy tales collected by Petre Ispirescu. In my opinion, the origin of the respective idiom has nothing to do with the fake information circulated by ancient calendars (similar to almanacs), but rather with certain magical practices or sorcery which, in time, became old-fashioned, unreliable and, therefore, associated with lying.

Expresii romȃnești by Stelian Dumistrăcel, based on the information provided by the article dedicated to the phrase a fi bun de dus la balamuc [to be worth being put to a mental desease hospice]. The author brings new arguments to the different stages of evolution of phraseology, referring to the relationship between words and the elements of culture and civilization that determine them. As linguistic structures such as phrases often bring together elements that denote the reality of the world from which they originated, Stelian Dumistrăcel aims at describing those contexts in which certain phrases or word combinations acquire figurative meaning, thus outlining their “biography”.
