FANTASME GENEALOGICE ȘI IDENTITĂȚI SUBLIMATE: MIHAIL SADOVEANU, MATEIU CARAGIALE, PANAIT ISTRATI

Paul Cernat

Genealogical phantasms and sublimated identities: Mihail Sadoveanu, Mateiu Caragiale, Panait IstratiThis study aims to explore the typological links between the writings of three Romanian prose writers in the 1th half of the 20th century, defining for the Eastern European counter-modernity: Mateiu I. Caragiale, Panait Istrati and Mihail Sadoveanu. We explore their Balkanic (Southern) genealogy, as well as their biographical imaginary and cultural substratum, and we also talk about the points of convergence/divergence between their narratives. The aim is to identify a common pattern of those writings in which the biographic was reshaped and artistically sublimated by the ghosts of the South-Eastern tradition.

CONSTRUCȚII RETROSPECTIVE ALE MASCULINITĂȚII CULTURALE ÎN SECOLUL AL XIX-LEA ROMÂNESC: MEMORIALISTICA DESPRE SOCIETATEA JUNIMEA

Doris Mironescu

Retrospective Constructions of Cultural Masculinity in 19th Century Romania: The Memoirs on the Junimea SocietyThis article investigates the construction of cultural masculinity in the memoirs concerned with the Junimea literary society, founded in 1863 in Iași, especially in writings by Iacob Negruzzi, George Panu, Ioan Slavici, Titu Maiorescu, Nicolae Gane and C. Săteanu. Conforming to the norms of its time, Junimea was a literary society made exclusively of men of letters, either poets, prose writers, critics, historians, philologists, ethnologists, sometimes men of (exact) science. The memoirs left behind are written by former members of the society, which they remember fondly, and function as instruments of mythicisation of the (early stages of the) group, while at the same time endeavoring to „authenticate” their account with little-known anecdotes pertaining to the private peculiarities of the former colleagues. By revisiting the memoirs of the Junimea group from a perspective that includes the gender operator, the article will survey how cultural masculinity is retrospectively constructed through self-celebration, anecdote, irony, licentiousness, conviviality.

DE L’AUTOBIOGRAPHIE À L’AUTOFICTION : BRÈVE INCURSION DANS L’HISTOIRE D’UN GENRE PROTÉIFORME

Maricela Strungariu

From autobiography to autofiction: A short incursion in the history of a protean genreTowards the end of the 20th century, the self-writing is taking on increasing importance, while undergoing profound changes at the same time. The desire to renew the autobiographical genre and to adapt it to the new realities of the time led to the invention of a new self-writing, a hybrid and protean form: “autofiction”. Our intention here is to make a short incursion in the history of this new "genre", by examining in particular its evolution, its various configurations, its stakes and its literary, psychological and socio-political conditioning.

ȊNVĂŢĂTURILE LUI NEAGOE BASARAB CĂTRE FIUL SĂU THEODOSIE ŞI BIZANŢUL DUPĂ BIZANŢ

Porfirie Pescaru

Ȋnvăţăturile lui Neagoe Basarab către fiul său Theodosie (The teachings of Neagoe Basarab to his son Theodosius) and Byzantium after ByzantiumThe study problematizes the concepts of humanist Renaissance and Byzantine Renaissance, in order to demonstrate the need for a re-reading of Neagoe Basarab's work, as a representative text for the continuity of the Byzantine Christian model, otherwise called by Nicolae Iorga – Byzantium after Byzantium. Therefore, the study argues that the political-cultural vision and the religious commitment of Neagoe Basarab decisively participate in the transfer of the civilizational center from Constantinople – to the Orthodox communities and countries, and to its multiplication in the area of Eastern Christianity. Neagoe Basarab's text, in its entirety, is thought in such a way as to affirm and re-affirm the Christian vision of existence, the unbroken perpetuity of the evangelical teaching and patristic wisdom from the original Christianity.

MEMORIA GUSTULUI. ESTEZIE ȘI PRACTICI DE COMUNICARE

Florinela Floria

Memory of the taste. Esthesia and communication practicesTaste is an important part of food physiology (Brillat Savarin). As a natural sensory process, taste is involved in the selection of foods in the sense of an edible / inedible opposition. At the cultural level, taste is invested with aesthetic and social dimensions. Food communication is also a communication of taste. The communicative value of a cultural object lies in its capacity to generate images, meaningful representations for the recipient of this message. From a semiotic and communicative point of view, the sensory is dominated by two dimensions: esthesia and sociability. Taste is part of this structural paradigm (Giorgio Grignalfini). The subject-object semiotic relationship is dominated, in terms of taste communication, by multisensory and syncretism. Jean-Jacques Boutaud shows that the image of taste invests food objects with cultural and social values. The image of taste arises from the interaction between subject and object, as a social construct. Mass culture and new media offer “mythical” valences (Roland Barthes) to the construction of taste. The communication of taste updates, at the sychronic level of food discourse, its diachronic dimension, which calls on tradition and memory. In our work we aim to analyze the elements of the construction of taste in the communication campaign "Memory of taste" in relation to the rethinking tradition by the new Romanian cuisine.

TRANSPARENȚĂ ȘI OBSTACOL

Vasile Spiridon

PROLEGOMENELE UNUI PROIECT. ROMANUL DE CONSUM ÎN SPAȚIUL CULTURAL ROMÂNESC

Prolegomena of a research project. The popular novel in Romanian cultural spaceThis paper relies on the enlargement of the Romanian literary canon and on a greater emphasis on the social relevance of literature by investigating the most relevant theoretical contributions operating with notions such as “long nineteenth century”, “popular culture”, “genre literature” and “subgenre”. All attempts to analyse the Romanian non-canonical novel is based on the adoption of a terminology focused on consumption parameters: ”popular fiction”, ”mass literature”, ”popular novel”, ”bestseller”. Traditional theoretical issues such as literary canon, periodization, authorship attribution, and literary movements can be redefined through a new perspective bolstered by Popular literature, 19th-century contexts and Digital Literary Studies (DLS). The most efficient way of overcoming the theoretical difficulties encountered so far in the research of modern Romanian prints would be an initiative that combines Digital Humanities tools and methods with the traditional approaches on literary history and theory. Pop Lite is the first Romanian research project to propose such an approach.

ALEGERILE COMPARATISTULUI: PENTRU O CALE DINCOLO DE IDEOLOGIE

Mariana Baloşescu

The choices of the comparatist: for a path beyond ideologyThe paper is an essay about my personal experience in the field of comparative literature – research and teaching. I entered this territory through my doctoral research, dedicated to the identification of an epistemological model, as a dominant pattern in the European modernist novel. During my doctoral research, I learned that philosophy can be a productive, even mandatory, way of analyzing aesthetic-literary modernity, but insufficient. I naturally sought to reposition myself in relation to literature, in such a way as to capitalize and continue the experience acquired through the instrumentalization of philosophy, in the understanding of literature. The context in which the text is born, the thinking of the era, the history, the protoplasmic flow between person and society, in the space where the writer creates, have become an important target in building an own method in the practice of comparatism. This is how I moved towards assuming the mentality, as the main context, as a real and unreal place, where the literary text appears and where it then lives its existence and influence. In search of an anchor and a solution, in search of another hermeneutic foundation, which would help the recognition, valorization and identification of the presence of the person, memory and consciousness in the text, I first turned to the Socratic teaching, to Socrates of Socrates, from the Defense..., and to Plato's Socrates, from the Dialogues, in order to understand what connection still exists between today's modernity and the Greek origin that it so vehemently still claims. Then I discovered Christian philolocal thinking, patristic thinking, Saint Paul and Saint Augustine (De Magistro, Confessions). There I found the energy, inspiration and legitimation to develop a hermeneutic practice centered on revealing the inner man revealed in the text, precisely in the encounter between the author's consciousness and that of the reader (hermeneutic), through textual consciousnesses. And I see the inner man as a projection of the person's memory, organized especially in an ethical imaginary translated by the textual consciousness both through language and through the acts, scenarios, and choices evoked. So, the dominant ideas with which I ended up working are in a circle of the person: inner man, memory, conscience, morality. Hermeneutics, in this vision, can no longer be self-sufficient and serve a free interpretation, oriented towards itself, in an internal logic of the type – interpretation for the sake of understanding the text, interpretation for the sake of the logic of language, interpretation in order and discursive autonomy, etc.

„NOUA” LITERATURǍ COMPARATǍ: PROVOCǍRI, SOLUŢII, CONTROVERSE

Nicoleta Popa Blanariu

The “new” comparative literature: challenges, solutions, polemicsSince its beginnings, comparative literature has a bias toward innovation as well as toward institutional and ideological challenges. Particularly new media technologies involve a change of cultural paradigms, literary production and reception being no exception. In the new media era, literature often implies inter- or transmedial rewriting which leads to redefining the aims and objectives of comparative literature itself.
